"I believe textiles should connect us to nature, not harm it."

Our Story: The Journey of Color from Earth to Fabric

My journey into the world of natural dyes began not in a studio, but in the vibrant backyard gardens of Washington, DC. As a child, I was captivated by the ephemeral beauty of botanical hues—the deep purples of mashed berries, the surprising yellows from onion skins, the rich browns from fallen leaves. This early fascination sparked a lifelong curiosity, leading me to explore the profound connection between plants and color.

What started as a childhood wonder matured into a dedicated craft. I delved into the rich history of natural dyeing, studying traditional methods from around the globe and immersing myself in the intricate botany of dye plants. My hands became accustomed to the feel of silk soaking in an indigo vat, the subtle scent of simmering madder root, and the patience required as colors slowly, magically, bonded with fiber. It was a learning process that blended art, science, and a deep respect for natural processes.

BERTHA C SMOOT was founded out of a desire to share this magic, to offer a sustainable alternative in an industry often disconnected from its origins. Here in Washington, DC, I found a community that shares my passion for authenticity and environmental stewardship. I envisioned a space where textiles tell a story—a story of the earth's bounty, thoughtful craftsmanship, and a return to slow, intentional creation.

Today, this philosophy guides every piece I create. My work is an homage to slow textiles, where every bundle of leaves, every flower petal, and every dip into a dye pot is a conscious choice. I am committed to creating beautiful, eco-friendly textiles using foraged colors and sustainable practices, not just for their aesthetic appeal, but for the profound connection they foster to our local environment and shared heritage. Educating others about the beauty and potential of natural dyes is as much a part of my mission as the dyeing itself, fostering a greater appreciation for the colors that surround us.
